The second class of the
KyCGA CORE Farmer Program began
December 6, 2011 with its first learning session held at Kentucky Dam
Village. Crop expert John McGillicuddy provided an agronomic
overview for class participants. Each of the 16 class
members had to submit an application and were interviewed
for class enrollment.

The CORE Farmer Program class met
for their second session the first week in January in Murray,
Kentucky. Special thanks to Dr. Tony Brannon at
Murray State University for hosting the session.
Instruction focused on planting equipment and seed
emergence. Presenters on this topic were Ken Ferrie,
of CropTech Consulting, and Gregg Sauder, of
Precision Planting.
The CORE Farmer Program is a 14-month long program and
provides six learning sessions for the class members.
Learning sessions will present information on seed,
placement, precision technology, field demonstrations,
on-farm research, and an agri-business industry tour.
This course is designed to increase fundamental agronomy
knowledge among Kentucky grain farmers. All lessons are focused on
maximizing the long-term viability of family farms through crop
management techniques, localized attention to agronomy detail and
peer relationships.
The curriculum consists of six sessions, usually lasting 2-3 days
each. Participants can expect a total time commitment of 15-20 days
away from the farm over a 14-month period. Agronomy information will
be presented by the very best that the U.S. corn industry provides.
The material will be in-depth, challenging and rewarding. The
friendships developed among classmates will last a lifetime.
