Corn in the Classroom
Educating
our youth about agriculture and corn continues to be a priority for
the Kentucky Corn Growers Association as fewer and fewer children
understand where their food comes from. Staff participate in several
agricultural education events across the state to share how farmers
are producing our food, fuel and fiber. Materials and financial
support are also provided for many more events and state education
initiatives. KyCGA estimates that more than 30,000 Kentucky children
receive information about corn and the impact farmers and farming
have on their lives each year.
Why the Focus on Corn? - The United States is the
leading producer of corn in the world, and corn has played a very
important part in the settlement and culture of this country. Corn
continues to be a very important part of our lives. Most all
Americans consume or use some kind of corn daily. Corn is used in
more than 3,700 products to date, and scientists are trying to find
even more uses for this versatile, renewable resource that will make
our lives better and our environment cleaner. Corn also takes its
place as an important product from Kentucky. Producing about 175
million bushels annually, corn is Kentucky’s leading cash crop in
terms of value. Kentucky ranks 14th in the nation for corn
production. And not only are we trying to enforce the importance of
corn with our educational resources, but the vital role agriculture
plays in the world. The business of agriculture is the most
important industry in the world since it puts food in our bellies,
clothes on our backs, and fuel in our gas tanks.
