Corn Growers Expect
Excellent Crop Despite Late Start
(June
20, 2008
- Louisville, KY) –
Eighty percent of the 2008 Kentucky corn crop was designated
in good to excellent condition according to the June 16
Kentucky Agricultural Statistics Service (KASS) Weekly
Crop and Weather Report despite the late planting due to
heavy Spring rainfall. In fact, corn emergence was ahead of
the five-year average, at 98 percent.
“This is
great news for our growers,” says Jerry Griffith, president
of the Kentucky Corn Growers Association (KyCGA). “Each year
we are so dependent on the weather, and it looks like it
will work in our favor this growing season.”

Message from the President
Corn Growers should proactively defend their industry

Jerry Griffith,
KyCGA President |
Corn farmers and the ethanol industry have
taken a smattering in the press over the past few months.
Rapid fire has been coming from all angles: national media,
local media, the grocery industry, the petroleum industry.
There is more to come, too. Estimates about how many
advertising dollars ethanol opponents will dedicate over the
next 12 months reach the $100 million mark. It’s obvious
that our financial resources can’t compare with that, but
there is still a lot that we can do.

NCGA Welcomes Positive Corn Acreage, Stocks Reports
The National Corn Growers Association
today welcomed the news that U.S. corn growers have planted
more corn acres than projected by the U.S. Department of
Agricultures in an earlier report. At 87.327 million acres,
planted corn acreage is approximately 1.3 million acres
above the agency’s March Prospective Plantings report.
“This extra acreage has helped protect our
corn supply at a time when flooding has threatened the
industry,” said Ron Litterer, NCGA president and a grower
from Greene, Iowa. “We’re happy that growers have exceeded
the March expectations and we know that they will work hard
to provide a good harvest in the fall, to help meet all
food, feed and fuel needs.”
At 87.3 million acres, planted corn
acreage is the second highest since 1946, behind last year’s
total of 93.6 million acres. Although this represents a
seven percent reduction in corn acreage from 2007’s high,
this is still the second largest corn acreage since 1946.

For Some, Money Trumps Research
The Houston Chronicle ran a front-page story July 2 on Texas
Gov. Rick Perry’s request for a waiver of the renewable
fuels standard, and how his request followed within days a
$100,000 contribution that Bo Pilgrim of Pilgrim’s Pride
made to the Republican Governors Association, chaired by
Perry. Pilgrim has been one of the most vocal opponents of
corn-based ethanol over the past few months.
