New Corn Uses
Promotion
The Kentucky Corn Growers
Association is dedicated to supporting the development of
new corn use markets and promoting those uses.
There are currently more than
3500 uses for corn and that number is growing. Scientists
are constantly attempting to discover ways to use biomass
materials, such as corn, for everyday earth-friendly
products.
Polylactic Acid (PLA)
- Biodegradable corn plastic
is one of the newest earth-friendly forms of corn.
Scientists are able to utilize the lactic acid produced from the
corn fermentation process and develop a polymer that can be
molded into plastic forms or fibers.

Cornstarch-based Molded Foam Products
have properties similar to polystyrene (Styrofoam™) and
other petroleum-based foam products, but are completely
biodegradable and are derived from renewable resources.
Examples are packing peanuts, foam package inserts for
protection, and craft materials (Magic
Nuudles).
