On
February 14, 2006, the KyCGA Board of Directors elected a
new president, Jerry Griffith, of Sedalia. Griffith has
served on the Board of Directors since 2003 and has been a
regular honoree in the national and state corn yield
contests.
Griffith grew up on a dairy
farm in south Graves County and received an agriculture
degree from Murray State. In 1972, his family sold the dairy
and moved 10 miles north to a row crop farm. He and his
brother, John Griffith, currently own 2500 acres in a farm
partnership and usually plant half corn and half beans with
600 acres used for double crop wheat and beans.
In the past few years,
Griffith says they have used variable rate planting,
fertilizer and lime, as well as, using monitors to check
yields. Two years ago they purchased an autotrac system and
now use it to plant, fertilize and spray.
“We don’t make as much corn
as we once did because all the rows are straight,” jokes
Griffith. “The old saying was you made more corn in crooked
rows because very few people could plant straight rows.”
Griffith is involved in the
Lions Club, having served as president of his local and zone
chairman of his district. He is a member of Sedalia Baptist
Church were he serves as trustee and assistant treasurer.
“I look forward to serving as
president of Kentucky Corn Growers and consider it an honor
to do so,” says Griffith. “We have a very good board and set
of officers.”
Griffith is humble about his
new leadership role, but plans to do his best for Kentucky’s
farmers.
