On
January 23, 2006, several Kentucky agencies and
organizations hosted the Renewable Fuels Summit in Frankfort
to discuss a Renewable Fuel Standard for Kentucky, a step
many states are taking to reduce foreign oil dependence.
Legislators, oil companies, fuel retailers, and renewable
fuel producers were among those that attended.
KyCGA, a summit supporter, enlisted the help
of NCGA’s Geoff Cooper (right) to present a summary of other
states’ ethanol legislation. Scott Hughes, of the National
Biodiesel Board, also spoke.
Many
legislators were supportive of measures to increase
renewable fuel production and consumption in the
Commonwealth, but some said they were reluctant to suggest a
mandate is the appropriate action.
Among the strong supporters of ethanol and
biodiesel were Senator Joey Pendelton (D-Hopkinsville) and
House Majority Floor Leader Rocky Adkins (D-Sandy Hook).
Both gave encouraging talks about the future of biofuels in
Kentucky.
KyCGA will continue to work to see
legislation passed that creates greater demand for
corn-based ethanol.
